Helmut Lachenmann, born 1935 in Stuttgart. He is regarded as one of the most important contemporary composers; he studied composition, music, and counterpoint with Johann Nepomuk David and piano with Jürgen Uhde at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Making the acquaintance of Luigi Nono led to his time spent studying in Venice. His work in the field of instrumental music has resulted in the creation of a number of important works, some of which can be classified as musique concrète instrumentale. His solo works, chamber music, the opera Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern (The Little Matchgirl), and his full orchestral works are performed all over the world. He has been awarded the City of Hamburg's Bach Prize, the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award.
