Dora Kaprálová was born in Brno in 1975 and is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Czech literature. She writes and publishes critically acclaimed prose, essays, plays, radio plays, and screenplays, and has produced numerous radio documentaries. To date, five of her prose works have been published in German, most recently "Winterbuch der Liebe" (Winter Book of Love), translated by Nataša von Kopp and published by the Berlin-based Mikrotext Verlag. Her book "Herr Niemand und die weiße Finsternis" (Mr. Nobody and the White Darkness), illustrated by Darja Čančíková, is on the recommendation list for “Bavaria’s Best Independent Books 2024” in the children’s and young adult literature category and was published by Balaena Verlag. The work is praised for its poetic portrayal of fear and its exquisite watercolors. Her latest novel, "Mariborská hypnóza" (The Hypnosis of Maribor), will be published by Mikrotext Verlag in time for the 2026 Frankfurt Book Fair. The book was nominated in the Czech Republic for the prestigious 2025 Literary Critics’ Award in the prose category, received several accolades in various media as a cultural event of the year, was recorded as an eight-part reading for Czech Radio, and adapted for the stage. As part of her fellowship, Kaprálová will continue working on her melancholic novel, which brings fragile family memories back to life.

The author was awarded the residency fellowship at the Künstlerhaus Bamberg by Bavarian Minister of State Markus Blume, at the suggestion of the Villa Concordia literary fellowship board members Tanja Graf, Director of the Literaturhaus München, and Dr. Wolf Iro of the Goethe-Institut e.V. She will be working there for 11 month, from mid-April through mid-March 2027.
