The theme of painter Thomas Werner's work is the relationship between color, form, content, and reflection in painting. He places everything under the motto “hope” (Latin: spes).

The exhibition at Villa Concordia is the result of his six-month stay in Bamberg to date. During this time, he has created a series of paintings and an object that respond to impressions and circumstances in Bamberg on the one hand, and to the exhibition situation in the villa on the other. In addition to the series of paintings in the large exhibition room of the Künstlerhaus, he is showing a series of objects in a room in the basement.

Werner works in groups of works that sometimes differ greatly from one another. These groups of works include both individual paintings and ensembles of paintings condensed into rooms, such as the recent “Posteroica” group or the “VIA” exhibition in his Frankfurt gallery Bärbel Grässlin. An early example of these “decors” can be found in his solo exhibition at the Kunstverein Karlsruhe in 1990. The book “Decorum,” available as an open PDF on his website (in German), provides information on the concept of ornament and decor in the work of Thomas Werner: Decorum.pdf.
